For the songwriters out there….

Well I’m always looking for new ways to get my songs out there, and I’ve stumbled upon something quite revolutionary for songwriters. It’s not easy getting your music heard by publishers, etc… but one way that might help is by using MUSIC X RAY. I’m very impressed with this new system. You can check them out here: www.musicxray.net

It basically gives artists a way of showcasing their songs in a specific way that appeals to music industry professionals, and the site boasts that their network sets the right people up together, kind of like eharmony I suppose. They match your song’s style to the right opportunities…how brilliant, it’s all free, except that every time you want to send you song directly to a label, publisher etc…it may cost 3.00 as an example. It’s a small price to pay, but I’m thinking they should make it smaller, say 99 cents :) like itunes songs ;)
But it sure beats putting together a million presskits that cost a lot more! Plus, once you open the door with a company, that’s it. Who knows, maybe down the road , you get a publishing or record deal, it only took 3 bucks. not too shabby.

Worth trying out I say, and just for fun, I’ve uploaded an example to my blog here on the right so you can see it. I hope you enjoy the song, and Keep writing!

what’s new…how about you?

Been writing a lot lately, I had a minor re-injury to my foot which has left me at home reading and writing a lot. Not complaining, must be for a reason. I’m co-writing a lot now, which is really fun and different for me. I’ll be in studio next week with my Pal Mark putting some new magic together, and I’ve also been involved in a side project which may or may not lead to be my Main project depending on how things go, but I’m not spilling any beans.

I live in a condo on the fourth floor, and out my window there are always little kids playing , and this is where I’m looking when I’ve been writing lately and it has been inspiring a whole new way of thinking, a lot of lullaby type swaying rythms and such. Also a lot about what frustrations kids go through and how they cope and the little worlds they live in , and the Mothers , how they deal, I’m writing a lot about those subjects, something I’m not too familiar with, I’m not a mother, but I was a kid once, I do remember being creative and unstoppable as a child, it’s important to remember that kids are not little adults, they are kids.

that is all ….for now :)

Promise me Nothing

Tyler Gibb Wrote and directed a film called Refrain.  You can see all about that here :
http://www.tylergibb.com/refrain
As a side project, he asked that musicians would record their own versions of one of the songs written for the movie, and they would be placed on the Refrain website for download. The movie will be in this years World film festival. It is a movie about a lady in a abusive relationship, and how she finds her way out through song.
Here is a look at the trailer:

My version sounds nothing like the original “Promise me Nothing” by Vydia Lutchman , but the words make still apply. Its actually a second version, the first I put at the end of a demo that only some girls from the Fearless Tiger conferences know about. http://www.fearlesstiger.com but I felt this one coming, it had to get out, so there it is. You can hear my version , it’s up on Myspace now.

For those of you who don’t know what Fearless Tiger is, I ask you to visit the link. Paul Henry directs and runs this operation, and him and his team teach young women to fight back against an abuser. Once a year, The Fearless Tiger group tours Canada and some of the USA to visit high school girls . I go with them and sing some songs of mine, and it’s always a truly inspiring and emotional experience to meet this girls and hear their stories. I will be back on the road again soon starting this September, again you can view the dates at :

A Memorial for a star

I think everyone loved Michael Jackson’s music. I’m watching the Memorial service right now.  I’m watching Queen Latifah speak. I’ve always thought Queen Latifah was so cheesy and I really can’t stand her movies, but it touches me to hear her speech. ” We do know that we had him, and we are the world” What a beautiful way to say goodbye. I think what touches me the most, are the people in the audience. You can feel the love through the t.v screen , when there are some dead silences, you can hear people scream out “Michael we all love you” and you feel this Mass love. I love when you can feel a collective heart beating like this. I’ve experienced this when I used to sing in choir, you could feel that we are so into every second of it. Also felt that at some Tori Amos concerts.  It really makes you forget about everything in your life that you’ve been complaining about and just all stand as one and feel the energy between souls…..and you don’t feel alone anymore. You don’t feel alienated or scared or under pressure, you feel you belong, and you can do no wrong, I think that’s what Michael is feeling now, finally.

The day after…

Last night’s show at “Le Social”  was very cool. Dez really does know how to throw a bash! Every single artist that night inspired me in one way or another.  There were spoken word artists and musical acts, pop and blues and folk , a real mix of everything. Great Martini , lots of Olives, a great little Mini Chicken Burger, honestly the best thing I ever tasted.  I really wasn’t sure what to expect from this party/”celebration of life” 1920’s style Speakeasy, but I must say it was more than I expected, and I felt the love, and everyone was so kind and appreciative of what we came to offer, with our talents , and hearts open- was great. I’ve done some sneaking around on facebook and found some amazing photos of the night, unfortunately had no pics of my set, there may be some floating around in cyberspace , but I wouldn’t know.  ;)

Here they are:

Lots of exciting new things coming up.  Looks like I’ll be a part of this years Telethon of Stars in December, it’s a long way off, but pretty cool stuff !

70-out  (because my last name sounds like 70. Sort of. an old nick name. )

Gearing up….

Been A while since I’ve written anything, I guess you could say I’m a lazy blogger, which probably wont work for me in this day in age. I’m working on it.

Anyway I’m gearing up for this Saturday, I’ll be playing a show over at “Le Social”, for a very special event hosted by Lady Dez. It’s called Celebration of Life – Speak Easy edition.
We are supposed to all dress up in 1920’s Garb, or atleast a little. I still havent figured out what the heck I’m going to wear. BIG SURPRISE.
I’ll be playing 3 new songs, on the guitar(yay) no more lugging around that heavy piano for shows, for a while anyway.  15 bucks is cover, there will be many artists there showcasing I’m not the only one. Here is one of the posters. Although it has no info on the artists, you can find the Facebook Event called Celebration of Life- Speakeasy Edition to read all about the show.
